Designer Insights: The Future of Offices

Vol.3: Architects Thriving in Tokyo and Shanghai
Why a Showa-Era House Became Their Office

In the meeting space, twice a week, the team gathers for lunch to share updates on their work and engage in casual conversation, effectively fulfilling the role of an 'office lounge'. Even amidst busy schedules, they ensure to maintain interactions with one another. Additionally, with health in mind, those who wish sometimes participate in yoga or stretching sessions in the tatami room. Their desire to keep the minds and bodies of their colleagues healthy comes through clearly.

The table used for client meetings is an original design, crafted by Tendo Mokko. 'We met through a hotel project, and I appreciated the subtle, refined quality of Japanese wooden furniture, so we had it custom-made,' they explain. A monitor has been installed in what used to be a traditional Japanese storage space, allowing for online meetings with their Shanghai office.

Beneath the table, there are slots designed for temporarily storing documents, laptops, and books, keeping the table surface tidy even when many people are gathered. The selection of meeting chairs is unique, featuring Tsuji Mokko's 'Vintage Armchair', Hida Sangyo's 'SUWARI' designed by Kenya Hara, and Tachibana Shōten's 'Naguri Stool'.
